While researching whether or not this would work I came across some posts on here that theorized that plugging the Ally X’s USB4 port into the Thunderbolt port on the Razer Core X Chroma should work.

“Should” is terrifying when making a large purchase so let me confirm that it does work.

ROG Ally X connected to a Razer Core X Chroma running a TV off an nVidia RTX4070

The only issue I ran into during the setup was a couple of blue screens while trying to get the eGPU working. These occur because technically, the video card has been detected but the core itself hasn’t been fully set up, so it’s not actually able to use it, and trying to use it or install drivers will cause a blue screen.

To avoid this:

  1. Do the regular Ally X setup as normal
  2. Install Razer Synapse. This should happen automatically but did not for me, and took several reboots for the auto-installer to actually fire.
  3. Once Razer Synapse is installed and the Core X Chroma is detected, install the nVidia drivers for the GPU itself

Everything started working immediately after that and it’s been flawless.

I’m told that this will perform even better if I set the Ally’s VRAM setting to ‘auto’, but have not tested it.

Either way, it’s been a huge success. Cross-posted to reddit, twitter, and bluesky for visibility.
